Additional Details

APPLIANCE WIRING MATERIAL
Style 20101 Jacketed Cable
Rating 125 deg C, 300 Vac, Horizontal flame.
Conductor 18 AWG – 12 AWG solid or stranded round, tinned or bare copper.
Insulation TPE, 30 mils min average, 27 mils minimum at any point. See facing page for compound.
Assembly Two conductors, same as type SPT-3. Over the insulated conductors, an adhesive-backed copper tape 0.125 in by 0.0025 in thick is applied as a band at periodic intervals with the adhesive side down against the PVC insulation. A staple made of “monel” metal is driven through the in- sulation of one of the copper conductors and over the adhesive-backed copper tape at a slight angle to the conductor. The staple will protrude through the insulation and the points are bent over on the underside. The size of the staple is approx: length – 5/16 in, thickness 0.050 and width 0.024 in. A nichrome or other alloy resistance wire is then spirally wound around the insulated conductor and the copper banding tape. The AWG size and number of turns per inch will determine the watts per ft of the complete heating cable. A second tape of either adhesive-backed copper or TFE tape is then band wrapped over the heating element wire and the “monel” staple completely covering the first copper banding tape. This assembly is repeated alternately along the conductor. The second tape covering is simply to hold down the resistance wire and make contact with the “monel” staple and first copper banding tape.
Shield Optional.
Covering Optional – 13 mils min at any point of extruded thermoplastic elastomer, see Facing Page for Compound.
Braid Optional.
Jacket TPE, 40 mils min average, 32 mils minimum at any point. See facing page for compound.
Standard Appliance Wiring Material UL 758.
Marking General.
Use Pipe heating cable where the acceptability of the combination is to be determined by Underwriters Laboratories Inc.
